Artist Statement:
Oil paintings by Colin Vincent. Still Lifes and Bristol Scenes.
His latest project has seen him producing a series of unusual paintings of dolls. Posing action men, cindys and barbies together, he creates curiously voyeuristic scenes of dolls interacting, using a hyper-realistic style and makes the viewer feel as if they are catching a private moment - the visual equivalent of eavesdropping. The paintings have been selling incredibly well, tapping into the public's nostalgia with a hint of surrealism.
Colin poses the dolls using lengths of cotton to keep the in place, moving them around until they look like they;re in mid-conversation. Part of the ralism comes from realism comes from Colin;s technique of painting light so that it seems to be emanating from the dolls rather than falling on them. He buys most of the dolls in charity shops so they are quite battered, they are still lives that have had lives, so Coin tries to paint the as though they are living and breathing.
Colin's latest paintings have involved posing the dolls within typical Bristol - style urban scenes. This gives the paintings an extra contemporary edge and allows for Colin to indulge in his obsession with painting textures, such bricks and graffiti.
